Bobby Startup of The Autistics at the Hot Club, ca. Summer 1979. Bobby Startup got a surprise during the debut performance of his band The Autistics—Jay Medley of local band Science Fiction sprayed him with shaving cream before Bobby finished his first song. Startup was a key figure in the Hot Club scene, serving as d.j. and booking consultant, skills he used in later clubs like the East Side Club, Revival and Bar Noir. In the late 1960s he was stage manager for legendary psychedelic ballroom the Electric Factory. With former Hot Club bartender Tony Bidgood, he co-managed the Stray Cats in London.
